It’s 9 p.m. and the idea of an essay of 10 paragraphs that was assigned two months ago pops back into your head. . . and it’s due tonight. Admit it, we’ve all been there. We’ve all had those moments where we sit in front of our laptop or notebook, and decide to postpone our project for a “better time.” We go into the mind of a mad scientist, were the only thought on our mind is to complete our project.
No more procrastination..
But why didn’t we do this weeks before the due date? Here are some ways to beat the temptations to procrastinate!
1. Plan Ahead
Yes, it’s time to sit down and actually create a plan of what you’re going to do and how you’re going to do it. A lot of people use time management as an excuse for procrastination, but there are no excuses once you’ve disciplined your mind to work towards something. (Woah, that’s powerful!)
2. How are you going to manage your time?
Personally, a planner is an excellent way of organizing my schedule and how to work around it. Also, once something is assigned, I would place it somewhere noticeable, such as a mirror or a wall in my bedroom, so that it’s constantly nagging me to get it done already.
Another way is Google, which has multiple applications such as the calendar. In my everyday life I schedule everything on my calendar because it makes things much easier to know what I am doing in the day, week or even month. It is very helpful with juggling multiple things at once. In addition you can use reminders on your iphone or even your alarms, set a time for ahead just in case anything happens, it is better to be safe than sorry.
3. Make an Outline
Write down what you know so far. Do your research make sure you know the topic before writing it. This makes it easier to write and have a flow pattern.
4. Block all Social Media
Social Media is often the culprit of drawing attention away from a project. It’s a distraction that was planted in everyday items, probably the device which you are using to complete your assignment. Once a notification pops, we all think we have the self-control to simply clear it, but a better alternative is to stop the notification from popping up in the first place.
You can create time blocks to place your phone in a different room, perhaps an hour or two, however long it will take to get the task done. This helps narrow your focus and aim it solely towards your project.
Although you might consistently be busy with an overload of tasks and assignments, it is important to have some “me-time,” to clear your mind of worry. Currently in Proverbs, the book I’m studying this month, says, “Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.” Honestly, no one could have said it better. Taking a break and putting yourself first is a priority and it is beneficial in creating a clean slate and building up from there.
